Southern Beltway Project

Management Engineering Corporation (MEC) is currently providing Construction Inspection Services to the PA Turnpike Commission’s Southern Beltway Construction Project. A total of eight (8) highway sections on this project connect Interstate Route I-79 with U.S. Route 22. MEC will be inspecting four (4) of these sections as well as a new large Turnpike Maintenance Facility.

Section 55C1-1 from Cecil Reissing Road to S.R. 50 Turnpike 576 is approx. 2 miles in length & requires nearly 4 million c.y. of excavation. The project includes 4 bridges: 2 that span State Route 50, Wheeling and Lake Erie Rail Line and Millers Run Creek Road. A 3rd bridge connects Cecil Reissing Road to State Route 50. The 4th bridge is the overpass for Cecil Sturgeon road over Turnpike 576 (as part of the interchange) and connects with Reissing Road.

Section 55C1-2 between M.P. S-16.04 and M.P. S-17.97 in Allegheny County includes the construction of 1.0 mile of 4-lane concrete highway and .93 miles of graded highway for future construction, including a 2-span continuous steel, multi-girder bridge, a concrete box culvert and several RCP culverts. This project requires over 3 million c.y. of excavation.

Section 55C2-2 is approx. 0.25 miles south of the Allegheny/Washington County Line and approx. 0.2 miles north of the intersection of SR 1009 (Morganza Road) and SR 1010 (Cecil Henderson Road). This project includes the relocation of 6,500 feet of Morganza Road and 4,800 feet of Morgan Road. Also included is construction of a two-span concrete PA Bulb Tee Bridge carrying Morgan Road over SR 0576, a single-span concrete PA Bulb Tee Bridge carrying Morgan Road over Interstate I-79, a drainage culvert extension and a roundabout with highway lighting at the intersection of Morganza Road, Morgan Road and Baker Road.
