Replacement of WB-414 Bridge at MP 36.25

Management Engineering Corporation (MEC) served as the Construction Manager for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission’s WB-414 Bridge Replacement project at Milepost MP 36.25. This bridge carries State Route S.R. 0910 (Gibsonia Road) over the Mainline Pennsylvania Turnpike in Richland Township, Allegheny County. In addition to construction of the new two (2) span continuous steel superstructure bridge, extensive approach roadway construction and reconstruction of the S.R. 0910/North Montour Road (T-576) Intersection. This project also included a large anchored soldier pile wall. This wall is approximately 200 foot in length, is approximately 30 feet in height and supports the new bridge’s North abutment.

MEC was required to perform extensive coordination, not only with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC), but also the Pennsylvania State Police on this project. Numerous single lane closures, PACES (rolling stoppages) and Plan “X” total Turnpike closures were coordinated in order to safely complete construction operations, while ensuring safety and mitigating Mainline traffic impacts.

The WB-414 Bridge Construction project was the last of three (3) early action bridges, which were lengthened and replaced in advance of the PTC’s MP 31-38 Mainline Total Reconstruction Project. This Mainline Project, which started in 2009, completely reconstructs about 7 miles of the Turnpike Mainline and increased the number of travel lanes in each direction from two to three. Management Engineering Corporation was under contract with PTC to serve as the Construction Manager on this Mainline Total Reconstruction Project.
