Project Details

The Mansfield-Dravosburg Bridge is located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania & carries four lanes of the Pittsburgh McKeesport Boulevard over the Monongahela River, S.R.837 and the Norfolk-Southern and CSX Railroads.

The scope of work for this project provided for the complete rehabilitation of this 13-span, 1930’ long bridge. Included were all structural repairs/modifications necessary to carry current highway loadings, complete replacement of the concrete bridge deck, replacement of all expansion dams, drainage system, and approach span rocker expansion bearings, patching of deteriorated concrete on concrete substructure units, placement of scour protection around river piers, complete repainting of the steel bridge superstructure and complete replacement of all bridge lighting and navigation lighting.

Also included was the 62’ long concrete rigid frame carrying Pittsburgh McKeesport Boulevard over Maple Avenue. Repairs to this structure included concrete patching, painting, replacement of lighting & replacement of the stairway adjacent to the structure.

Improvements to the approach roadways included ramps connecting Maple Avenue on Dravosburg side of the bridge and approach roadways from Glassport and McKeesport on the east end of the bridge. Pavement patching and roadway work began approximately 950 feet prior to the bridge on the Dravosburg side of the bridge and 1,200 feet prior to the bridge from the City of McKeesport and proceeds 1,200 feet beyond the bridge into the Borough of Glassport. These improvements consisted of roadway patching, bituminous overlay and improvements to items such as concrete barrier, sidewalks, railing, mountable curb islands, roadway lighting and signing. Additionally, a pedestrian walkway was constructed on the Dravosburg side of the bridge leading from Pittsburgh McKeesport Boulevard down to Maple Avenue.

At least 1 lane of traffic was maintained at all times throughout the project area during rehabilitation activities. Both ramps on the Dravosburg side of bridge remained operational at all times as per the Traffic Control sequence.
