This project consisted of repairs to the existing standpipe system in the Central Business District (Downtown) subway. The work area began at the tunnel entrance near Ross Street and ended prior to the Gateway Center station.
The work occurred in the subway tunnel and at street level. All work was performed during off-peak hours and closely coordinated with Port Authority operations.
Inside the tunnel expansion loops, intermediate supports and thrust restraints were installed on the existing dry pipe system. New fire service/hose drops were installed in some work zones.
At street level existing fire department connections were removed and new Siamese connections were installed. New 4” ductile iron pipe was installed between the new Siamese connections and the existing dry pipe system in the tunnel. Installation of the Siamese connections required restoration of existing sidewalks including some terrazzo sidewalks. The work zone at Liberty and Fifth Avenues required new piping in the Liberty Avenue roadway. During excavation an existing 12” waterline was rerouted to avoid the standpipe system’s vertical drop. Restoration of Liberty Avenue included new concrete pavement and line striping.
